CHAPTER 7

COURTNEY

We've spent most of the night making love and getting to know each other on another level. I feel safe and loved in his arms and savor the feeling. But the serenity of the moment is suddenly shattered by the shrill ring of a phone.

Jensen groggily reaches over to grab it, his voice thick with sleep as he answers. "Hello?"

I sat up to look at him and watch his face turn to stone-cold serious. Concern fills his handsome features, and I can tell something is very wrong.

"What happened?" he asks. Then listens as the person on the other end of the phone speaks, but I can't make out what they're saying. "I'll be there as soon as I can," he says. Then he hangs up the phone before jumping out of bed.

The urgency in his movements has me getting up to follow him worried that something happened to his brother or someone else we know.

"What's wrong?" I ask as I throw a shirt on and follow him to the bathroom.

"My dad got into a fight and has been flinging Buffalo chips at a stranger who he swears has been following him. He has all the signs of early dementia, but I can't convince him or my mom to get him into a healthcare facility. I need to call Jonas and get over there," he says, pulling on his jeans.

Even though we haven't talked much about his parents, I know that this is serious.

"Well, I'm going with you," I say, getting dressed.

"What no. Stay here. I know you need to get back to the shelter today anyway," he says, slipping his shirt on.

"This is what I'm trained in, Jensen. Deescalating a situation and besides, I did a turn at a dementia and Alzheimer's unit while I was in school.”

I'm already getting dressed, but I notice his hesitation for just a moment before he nods his head and we both finish getting ready.

He helps me on his motorcycle and makes sure I’m on behind him before the engine roars to life beneath us.

"Hold on tight, babe," he says, pulling my arms around him so tight that my front is pasted to his back. As we race down the winding mountain roads, with the wind whipping through my hair, I hold onto Jensen tightly. His strong presence grounds me.

I've heard some talk of the commune outside of town. But I've never been there myself or even passed by it, so I have no idea what to expect as we get there.

As we pull into the commune, it's like stepping into another world. Everyone here is friendly, and they treat Jensen like family, even though I know he hasn't lived here in almost two decades. There are a couple of older women sitting in rocking chairs knitting and watching some of the people working in a small garden.

"Your dad is down by their place," a gentleman says after greeting us. It’s obvious that Jensen is worried because he takes no time for introductions.
